Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

What a gorgeous day.  Wore s/s shirt and shorts, a bit chilly running north with the breeze; but perfect once warmed up.  After 1.8 miles of warm up around the block, I hit the hills.  It felt good to run the hills and thought about the Newton Hills.  After the run, I walked 0.25 mile for recovery.  I'm gonna walk after every key workout and stretch frequently.  I think that's the key to muscle recovery.

Since I've started running seriously I spend a ton of time stretching. I swear it is the only thing that got me through the sore stages. Now, my wife just makes fun of me for stretching so much.

From Smooth on Wed, Apr 29, 2009 at 16:21:11 from 71.36.87.147

My BIL was able to prance up and down the stairs 3 hours after racing a 2:58 at Boston while the rest of us side-stepped down with pain. He's 48 yrs old. He is a believer of stretching. I need to be more consistent with that.

Smooth,

So what is your plan for Ogden? Are you going to try and PR or are you just taking it easy?

From JulieC on Wed, Apr 29, 2009 at 16:31:59 from 67.42.17.104

What hills are you by? I would definitely love company on the hills. I told my husband about my adventure and I hinted I would be dragging him up there to check out the scenery. He didn't look too excited. So after Ogden we should meet up somewhere on the shoreline trail. Run girl run!! Can't believe we are down to 2 1/2 weeks!!!

From Amber on Wed, Apr 29, 2009 at 16:48:40 from 64.255.88.143

Well hello there SMOOTH! How are you my favorite inspirational friend? Thanks for all of your tips and support through the dang injury, , it happens I guess!

I have yet to comment on your marathon. CONGRATULATIONS!!! (better late than never huh?) Jace, the babe who now pulls himself up to the computer desk, thinks it's no fun when I'm on the computer so I hardly have time to comment, but I religiously check up on you and LOVED your race report! What a great experience, I love all the details you provided of your week and you did amazing! I'm so proud of you and you are so speedy with your follow-up workouts WOWSERS! IT's like you have kicked into high gear! You're going to do great in Ogden, and when you pass my limping along, just say hi! ha ha

Thanks again for all the comments, it's always so fun to hear from you. You are one amazing gal, like I've said a million times over! but it's so true!

From Smooth on Wed, Apr 29, 2009 at 16:59:47 from 71.36.87.147

Rhett,

I don't know exactly what my Ogden goal is. Last year I ran a 3:59 (2 min. slower than Boston) with major cramping during for the last 10ks and horrible charlie horse attack after crossing the finish line. I felt that I have trained to run sub-4 but I'm still concerned about cramping. With a little luck and smart may be I can PR. I will be happy with another BQ though.

Julie,

I live on the Lehi Bench. There are 5 hills that run north and south all withing a mile by my house. Then there's suncrest hill, a 13.1 mile round trip that is awesome training run. I'd love to have you show me the shoreline trail. Hope I get to meet you at Ogden.

Amber,

THANKS! I can just picture little Jace toddling around your knees. You have a very active busy life of a vivacious young mother. I'm so impressed with all that you do to raise your family and find time to improve yourself all the time.

From Kathie on Wed, Apr 29, 2009 at 19:02:21 from 207.155.176.10

nice run smooth. I think I will start walking with my hubby at night even though it is hours after I run I think it will help.

From Kelli on Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 00:41:05 from 71.219.102.162

I agree with the walking, it makes me feel so much better!!

What training are you following now and what are you gearing up for, Ogden???

From Smooth on Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 00:49:08 from 71.36.87.147

Kathie,

Hope you had a nice stroll with your hubby. Mine went to the temple with me exchanging glances and winks. Why do they separate the married couple in the endowment session of all place? Isn't families are forever meant on earth too?

Kelli,

I'm training/tapering for Ogden. With back to back marathons, I get to be in constant taper mode. JOY!

From Kelli on Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 00:52:08 from 71.219.102.162

This is not looking like a taper! You are working HARD!!!!

From bec on Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 12:08:19 from 205.123.38.98

I am so proud of you for logging all of those miles, just a week after a big marathon. I am not completely healed yet, a lot of cross training for me.

My mom said she saw you running the other day, she was glad to see you. I told her you said "thanks for the neckalce."

From MrsFIT on Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 12:55:40 from 205.127.70.66

Stretching and rolling out are CRITICAL for muscle recovery and are as enjoyable to me as the run itself.

From Smooth on Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 12:59:23 from 71.36.87.147

Kelli,

I learned from Lowell that our body remembers what it was put thru (running a marathon or a long run) between Boston and Ogden. The important thing to do during tapering is don't let the body think that it's on vacation now. So the fine line is to keep the intensity and cut back on the beating so it will be fresh for the next marathon. I tapered down on mileage 3+ weeks out from Boston. With Ogden I plan to taper 10 days out.

Bec,

You are doing great. I'm thinking if I'm not sore may mean I didn't give it all at Boston like you did? I will never know what it feels like to run at puke pace zone or do the Kenyan drop. I'm a big wimp.

It was so NICE of your mom and sister to make me that beautiful necklace. Are you wearing yours? It's hanging on my medal rack. I look at it every day. You and your family made Boston so memorable for me. THANKS!!!

From Smooth on Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 13:02:06 from 71.36.87.147

MrsFIT

You are so right. I was never consistent with that. Thinking it's only necessary if you're sore and injured. But I'm learning. Thanks for the testimonial coming from a PE teacher and great runner.

From bec on Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 13:06:55 from 205.123.38.98

Smooth,

I won't ever race in the "puke zone" either. I trained hard so I could really enjoy Boston, I did that. There is just something going on at the top of my left thigh. I guess I will wait it out, but it has been really hard with the beautiful weather.

I love my charm necklace too. My sister does beautiful work, I will have to give you her website and you can check out her other stuff.

Thank you for making Boston so memorable. My family keeps talking about "when we go back..." I hope that we will be going next year.

Take care.

From Smooth on Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 13:12:21 from 71.36.87.147

Bec,

What a bummer! Is it your hip flexor? May be you should go to a PT and get it worked out. It is beautiful running weather.

Jenny does beautiful work. She's so creative and brilliant.

You better do Boston next year. It won't be the same without you. Your family already planning it. Sign up for Radisson Boston so we can be in the same hotel. Just do it! :-)

From Kelli on Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 13:36:55 from 71.219.69.60

You are so smart!

From JulieC on Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 15:04:55 from 67.42.17.104

Off the subject-- did you see the free five miler on May 9th that Sasha posted? I was wondering, having done a 5k a week before SGM, if a 5 miler is okay a week before Ogden? I was thinking it would be a good tune up but not sure.

From Smooth on Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 15:25:32 from 71.36.87.147

Julie,

I normally do 12 miles with at least half of it at marathon race pace a week from marathon. I have heard that it is safe to do speed work 10 days out. I imagine racing a 5 miler a week out will be a good tune up and confidence booster. Just be sure not to do any speedwork that week if you're gonna race the 5 miler.
